Hackers are NOT super heros!

So as a blogger /writer I’m always approached by people asking me to write about things of interest to others. This time however I’m going to be writing about a peeve of mine.  My peeve… People in Facebook/Google+/Tumblr/Friendster/etc, claiming that they got hacked by ONE particular person, application or some other excuse they come up with.

Some of the social media thats currently used

For one thing, people using social media HAVE to learn that hackers, they do NOT have some grand omnipotent powers that be to hack one single persons facebook based on their profile. It’s just NOT possible for them to do this UNLESS you as a user ALLOW a hacker into your account. I’ve told people this over and over again as an IT professional for the last 18 years, but I always get the same excuses,

“Oh well I added this person named So-In-So and they hacked my FB/Twitter/Tumbler/Google+”
My response is “HA! BULLSHIT!”

Don’t give me that crap and expect me to believe it… EVEN I know that a single person cannot access your profile unless you give them your password! The only way a SINGLE person can even post crap onto your wall is through permissions! If you add a person who’s got the hijacking browser app and YOU as a user click ON that app not knowing just what it is then guess what… it’s YOUR fault for not checking it out! If you click on ANY link within any social media without checking it out it’s YOUR issue not some random person named Linda Smith or Jason Lee, these people have NOTHING to do with the issues that facebook or you are having, it only alienates every single person with these names!  These accusations are HOAXES; learn to read up on crap like this before you post it… A fine example is below.

This has NOT been confirmed by Facebook if anything it’s been denied and is a load of crap! Again NO single person can hack YOUR profile, the only way anything can be posted to YOUR profiles wall is if your security is low, you click on a link without learning about it (this is browser hijacking) and or you give out your password through a phishing email. Learn NOT to do this. Do not fall for these fake “turn your profile a different color” options they are called scam surveys.

If you've received this option, PLEASE for the love of God, DO NOT add it!

Do NOT download user created applications these are also a great way to get a malwear attack and one of the most common ways hackers can compromise your account, not only that but your friends will click on that same link and also download the same app and get the same issue! Prime example is anyone who downloaded the application claiming to change your facebook back to the original OLDER look/version… DON’T do it!!!… It’s a malwear app which WILL affect your computer and those of any of your friends who click on that application as well.

If you've tried this, you are at risk for an attack, ANYTHING app wise that asks you to download something, IS MALWEAR! Be wise, do NOT download anything from ANY social network! If it's not contained on their servers, 10 to 1 it's a hackers attempt to mess up your life for their own amusement!

Do not as well leave all your personal info in your profile, hackers tend to use your own email address and personal info from your social media pages to spam you via email praying you fall for the phishing scam and give out your password, as most know many use the same password for MANY things, remember use different passwords for different sites this will save you a lot of problems down the road and prevent hackers from getting into say your bank account! Do NOT use simple passwords and NEVER your birth date or that of your family members.  Do not use single digit numbers repeated, passwords should be 8-16 digits long and at least ONE letter.

Another common issue I’ve noticed is people posting Amber Alerts claiming some kid went missing in a certain area, snatched by someone with a particular car, and then the licence plate number… PLEASE for the love of god LOOK IT UP!!! If there’s a real Amber Alert the site will have the most current ones up and Google is your BEST tool to find the new stories about any abductions. Below are a few variants of an Amber Alert circulating in Facebook and other social sites. The plate number changes, along with the town, city or state and even the sex of the missing child.

Notice how the info changes in the next one?

use google to check to see if these alerts are true!

The next is the “Facebook will donate $ to this persons family for every like/share or click, help this poor kid with Cancer/diabetes/some weird disease you would if it was your kid” Facebook DOESN’T DO THIS!!! NO company actually does this as they do NOT have a way of tracking forwarded mailed items! This is a waste of time and makes YOU as a user a SPAMMER!!! Don’t do it… ok it’s just plain annoying and a great way to get you deleted… if you’re wondering about the authenticity of a claim LOOK IT UP! Google is a god send, use it! The next best thing to use is Snopes and Hoaxslayer or the Amber Alert pages. All can be found below:

http://www.snopes.com/ – the definitive Internet reference source for urban legends, folklore, myths, rumors, and misinformation.

http://www.hoax-slayer.com/ – Hoax-Slayer is dedicated to debunking email hoaxes, thwarting Internet scammers, combating spam, and educating web users about email and Internet security issues.

http://www.amberalert.com/ – Alerts are added on STRICT requirements, if the child is at risk of bodily harm, abuse or neglect, if the child is 17 years of age or younger and the abduction has been confirmed, with a description of the child and the abductor and the vehicle if it’s available. False alarms only cause panic!

So to all my friends who use social networks no matter which one you use please be wise, and network savvy, LOOK info up, avoid giving out too much info and be careful of the links you click on and PLEASE only post info you know is 100% authenticated, avoid being a spammer yourself and keep hackers away from your life. In the words of my kids K.I.S.S. (Keep It Simply Safe) avoidance is best!
